President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged on Monday to work together to fight terrorism and strengthen the already-strong relationship between the United States and Canada.
"We have some wonderful ideas on immigration," Trump said during a joint press conference in Washington.
"Canada and the U.S. will always be each other's most essential partners," Trudeau said.
But both leaders admitted there are some differences in the two nations' policies towards immigrants.
Canada will "continue to pursue policies of openness" toward Syrian refugees, said Trudeau, a policy in direct opposition to Trump's recent executive order banning them — an order overturned by a federal judge.
"We want to have a big, beautiful open door. But we can't let the wrong people in," Trump said.
Trump and Trudeau also spoke about creating more opportunities for women on both sides of the border, with Canadian leader also telling reporters, "We are going to be creating greater opportunities for middle class Canadians and Americans."
In a joint statement, pledged to continue border security programs launched by the Obama Administration. And they endorsed NATO — the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
