Donald Trump's controversial comments about Muslims play into the "game plan" of ISIS and other terrorist groups, according to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
In an interview Monday on
CNN's "New Day," the mayor said Trump is "doing the bidding of our enemies" with remarks like those that voiced support of
tracking Muslims in America.
"Because our enemies, in particular ISIS, want to see the American people divided, for example, against the Muslim-American community," de Blasio said.
No American should ever be "put on a list" because of their religion, he added.
De Blasio — the focus of
Trump Twitter barbs in the past — said the front-running GOP presidential contender "is clearly trying to divide. That doesn't make us stronger, that doesn't make us cohesive."
"That's the ISIS game plan," de Blasio declared. "And what Trump is saying is falling right into that game plan."
"What he's saying is corrosive to our democratic values. It's dangerous. And I'll call him out and I think more and more people are saying, what it used to be to some people entertaining, it's not entertaining anymore, it's dangerous."
De Blasio also decried Trump's speech before the Republican Jewish Coalition last week, when he told the crowd he was a
"negotiator like you," saying the crack invoked an "age-old, horrible stereotype."
The Anti-Defamation League, however, has defended the speech, saying "context is everything,"
The Hill reported.
