Obama: 'Americans Will Always Stand With Spanish Friends'

Former President Barack Obama and others across the political spectrum expressed their condolences Thursday for the terrorist attack in Barcelona that killed 13 people and injured as many as 50 others.

Obama, the two-term Democrat, took to Twitter:

Michelle and I are thinking of the victims and their families in Barcelona. Americans will always stand with our Spanish friends. Un abrazo.

Another Democrat, President Bill Clinton, also tweeted:

Standing with and grieving for the people of Barcelona in the wake of this despicable terror attack.

As did Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who ran against Obama for the White House in 2008:

In a statement reported by CNN, the Vatican said that "the Holy Father is following with great concern what is happening in Barcelona.

"The Pope is praying for the victims of this attack and wants to express all his closeness to the Spanish people, in particular to the injured and the families of the victims," the statement said.
