British Prime Minister Theresa May announced Tuesday that the nation's terror threat level had been raised from severe to critical – meaning a terror attack is considered imminent, reports say.
She made the sombre announcement from Downing Street, referring to the deadly Manchester Arena bombing that killed at least 22 people attending a concert of pop singer Ariana Grande – and the inability of authorities to assure the suicide bomber was working alone, ITV reported.
"It is a possibility that we cannot ignore that there a wider group of individuals linked to this attack," she said.
"The change in the threat level means there will be additional support available to the police as they work to keep us safe."
"It is now beyond doubt that the people of Manchester and of this country have fallen victim to a callous terrorist attack, an attack that targeted some of the youngest people in our society with cold calculation," she said.
"This was among the worst terrorist incidents we have ever experienced in the United Kingdom."
