A new Quinnipiac University poll is placing Hillary Clinton at 26 points over Bernie Sanders in Florida, based on a much-higher percentage of women picking the former secretary of state.

Clinton is ahead of Sanders by 59-33 percent, the poll shows, with women backing her by 69-24 percent, compared to men backing Sanders by 47-43 percent.

In the poll of 476 likely Democratic primary voters, taken from Feb. 21-24 and carrying a 4.5-point margin of error, the numbers include:
  • Voters ages 18-44 : Sanders over Clinton, 51-39 percent;
  • Voters ages 45-64: Clinton over Sanders, 64-28 percent;
  • Voters over 65: 73-21 percent for Clinton.
"This has been a turbulent political year, but the Florida Democratic primary looks like a blow-out. With her 26-point lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders, Secretary Hillary Clinton would have to undergo a political meltdown of historic proportions to lose this contest," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

The former secretary of state also leads among voters describing themselves as "very liberal," "somewhat liberal" or "moderate to conservative," the poll found.

In other numbers:
  • 8 percent remain undecided;
  • 17 percent may change their minds;
  • 25 percent want someone who cares about their needs and problems, with Sanders over Clinton among those voters by 48-42 percent;
  • 20 percent most want someone who is honest and trustworthy, with Sanders over Clinton among those voters by 49-37 percent;
  • 16 percent most want someone with the right experience, with Clinton taking those voters by 89-9 percent;
  • 15 percent most want someone who shares their values, with Clinton ahead with those voters by 53-44 percent.
