Former President Ronald Reagan's daughter, Patti Davis, said Donald Trump's "Second Amendment people" comments were "horrifying."
In a post on her Facebook page, the actress and author said Trump's words could influence people to commit violent acts like John Hinckley Jr., the man who shot her father and others in 1981.
"I am the daughter of a man who was shot by someone who got his inspiration from a movie, someone who believed if he killed the President, the actress from that movie would notice him," Davis said, referring to Hinckley's assassination attempt which was an effort to impress actress Jodie Foster.
Davis said that both his supporters and potentially dangerous people heard his comments.
"Your glib and horrifying comment about 'Second Amendment people' was heard around the world. It was heard by sane and decent people who shudder at your fondness for verbal violence. It was heard by your supporters, many of whom gleefully and angrily yell, 'Lock her up!' at your rallies.
"It was heard by the person sitting alone in a room, locked in his own dark fantasies, who sees unbridled violence as a way to make his mark in the world and is just looking for ideas," Davis wrote.
Trump made the comments at a rally in North Carolina in which his words could have been interpreted as a call for gun owners to attack Hillary Clinton. Trump blamed the media for stirring the controversy,
Davis said she believed that Trump knew the power that his words held, and said them anyway.
"Yes, Mr. Trump, words matter. But then you knew that, which makes this all even more horrifying," Davis wrote.
Davis spoke out against Hinckley's release from prison saying that she believes in the power of forgiveness, but "forgiving someone in your heart doesn't mean that you let them loose in Virginia to pursue whatever dark agendas they may hold dear."
Another actress, Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill, daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, weighed in on Trump's remarks in a comment on Davis' Facebook post, saying she has thought about meeting with Trump to discuss his actions.
"I just had this fleeting thought that someone should let him know what his behavior and actions have wrought and that this is turning into a civil war because of his nature," Luckinbill said.
