Hillary Clinton appears to have clinched the popular vote while losing to Donald Trump in the Electoral College.
In the latest count released shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, Clinton had 59,204,408 votes nationally, while Trump closely trailed with 59,058,307 — a margin of 146,101, NPR reports.
The final totals won't be available for weeks as absentee ballots are counted, but if the numbers hold, Clinton would be the fifth president in American history to lose the Electoral College while winning the popular vote.
The others are: Andrew Jackson in 1824, Samuel Tilden in 1876, Grover Cleveland in 1888 and Al Gore in 2000.
Politico called the Clinton's possible win-lose scenario as "a punch to the gut," adding such a win would "likely provide little comfort besides adding a footnote to her historic run" with Republicans in control of not only the presidency, but also the Senate and House of Representatives.
