Report: Trump Mulls Gabbard Shake-Up After Iran Clash

By    |   Thursday, 02 April 2026 10:01 AM EDT

President Donald Trump has reportedly sought input from Cabinet members on whether to replace Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Trump has privately raised concerns about Gabbard's leadership in recent weeks, particularly following internal disputes over intelligence assessments tied to the administration's military actions against Iran, according to a report Thursday from The Guardian.

The discussions come after the resignation of National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent, who publicly disagreed with the administration's position that Iran posed an imminent threat.

Trump sharply criticized Kent, calling his departure "a good thing" and arguing that Iran's threat was clear to U.S. leaders and allies alike.

Sources cited by The Guardian said Trump grew frustrated when Gabbard appeared to defend Kent or failed to strongly back the administration's justification for the Iran operation.

Still, Trump has offered a measured public response, saying he has confidence in Gabbard while acknowledging differences in their views.

The White House has also defended her work, pointing to the administration's broader national security successes.

Gabbard, for her part, has emphasized her role in supporting the president's authority as commander in chief.

In a March 17 post on X, she underscored that Trump was "overwhelmingly elected" and is responsible for determining threats and taking action to protect the nation.

"After carefully reviewing all the information before him, President Trump concluded that the terrorist Islamist regime in Iran posed an imminent threat," Gabbard wrote, reinforcing the administration's position.

That message aligned with reports noting that Gabbard has backed Trump's decisions even amid internal disagreements within the intelligence community.

The episode highlights broader tensions within the national security apparatus, where some officials have questioned intelligence conclusions while others have supported a more assertive posture toward Iran.

The Associated Press reported that Kent's resignation reflected those divisions, though Republicans have praised his past service.

Despite the friction, advisers caution that Trump has not made a final decision on Gabbard's future, and no clear replacement has emerged.

The president has shown a preference in his second term for reassigning officials rather than dismissing them outright, suggesting any move could be handled carefully to avoid political disruption.

At the same time, the situation reflects Trump's willingness to demand alignment from top officials on critical national security issues, particularly when it comes to confronting adversaries like Iran.

Adding to the backdrop of potential shake-ups, multiple recent reports indicate Trump has also considered replacing Attorney General Pam Bondi with Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, signaling a broader review of key leadership roles within the administration.
