Pa. Gov. Shapiro Nets $10 Million in First Quarter for Reelection Bid

By    |   Thursday, 02 April 2026 02:21 PM EDT

Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro pulled in more than $10 million in the first three months of the year for his reelection campaign, his team told Axios — a staggering sum that highlights the fundraising muscle of a potential 2028 presidential hopeful.

The massive total underscores Shapiro's financial advantage as he seeks a second term this November in the battleground state and points to his ability to raise significant cash if he ultimately launches a White House bid. Meanwhile, his likely Republican opponent, state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, has struggled to keep pace financially.

The Cook Political Report recently upgraded its rating of the race from "likely Democrat" to "solid Democrat," citing Shapiro's cash edge and double-digit polling lead. Shapiro's team says his fundraising total is twice the previous record for a Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate at this point in the cycle.

An aide for Shapiro told Axios the governor donated $250,000 in February to the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. He has also been active in efforts to influence the state party as Democrats work to flip several GOP-held congressional seats.

Shapiro's campaign reportedly declined to release additional details, including how much cash it currently has on hand. Pennsylvania is one of the few states with no limits on campaign contributions from individuals or political action committees in state races.

Garrity's campaign has yet to report its first-quarter fundraising numbers. She raised $1.5 million in 2025, compared with Shapiro's $23 million during the same period.

During an interview with CBS News in January, Shapiro recounted a conversation he'd had with President Donald Trump in which the commander in chief cautioned him about the inherent dangers of the presidency.

He told Norah O'Donnell that Trump reached out about a week after Shapiro's official residence was set on fire in 2025, just hours after his family celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover.

"He said, 'You know, being president's a really dangerous job,'" Shapiro said. "And he rattled off other jobs that have a lower fatality rate than presidents."

"And he said, 'It's very, very dangerous. Just be careful,'" the governor added.

The suspect in the arson attack, Cody Balmer, 38, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison.
