Today, vitamin C is promoted as a panacea for anything from a common cold to cancer. Also called ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for the normal functioning of the body.
Unlike most mammals, human beings do not naturally produce vitamin C in their bodies. This is why we must obtain vitamin C through our diet. Ideally, one would get vitamin C from fresh vegetables and fruits including cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, fresh parsley, cilantro, bell peppers, and all varieties of berries. The FDA recommends 60 mgs of vitamin C per day.
The following are ways in which vitamin C benefits overall health:
· Vitamin C plays a significant role in collagen production and helps heal burns and wounds.
· Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine. A diet rich in vitamin C helps fight conditions like the common cold and seasonal allergies.
· Vitamin C helps the body neutralize stress caused by physiological and psychological reasons.
· Vitamin C repairs collagen. Collagen is a tissue needed for healthy blood vessels, bones, teeth, and gums. It also protects the skin after exposure to (UV) rays.
· External application of vitamin C helps form new tissue, blood vessels, and cartilage.
·Vitamin C helps fight conditions like hypertension, cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammatory disease, cancer, and diabetes.
· Vitamin C can be used to regulate the blood sugar levels of diabetics. This vitamin provides a protective mechanism against many diabetic complications like slow wound healing, capillary problems, and poor blood circulation.
· Vitamin C is beneficial for those with Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, autoimmune disorders, preeclampsia in pregnant women, and gingivitis. Vitamin C also aids in proper nerve communication by synthesizing certain neurotransmitters.
· Another great property of vitamin C is that it helps the body absorb iron.
