7 Trump Positions on Gun Control

By    |   Thursday, 17 November 2016 03:27 PM EST

President-elect Donald Trump's views on gun control mirror the opinions of many conservatives. However, as with other issues, he is more outspoken about gun rights with his strong stances.

He appears to be adamant when it comes to the Second Amendment, making general comments on how to handle certain issues. His proposals haven't always been very big on specifics, so he might spend more time developing plans before his inauguration in January.

Here are seven Trump positions on gun control:

1. Appointing justices — Trump has promised to nominate Supreme Court justices that will uphold the Second Amendment while protecting and defending the Bill of Rights, “including the freedom of religion, speech, press, and right to bear arms,” according to his campaign website.

2. Defending law-abiding gun owners — Trump also highlighted his endorsement of a national right to carry in all 50 states, and has said that military personnel on bases and recruiting centers have a right to defend themselves.

3. Background checks — He has stated he wants to fix a defective system that allows people with criminal records and mental-health issues to acquire guns because states fail to properly put information into the database. Most people who go through background checks are law-abiding gun owners, Trump says, and he doesn’t want to “expand a broken system,” according to Business Insider.

4. Firearms of choice — Trump has called legislation to ban semiautomatic rifles and large magazines “a total failure,” Business Insider notes. The legislation hasn’t kept guns away from violent criminals. He once supported a ban on assault weapons but has changed his position over time.

5. Mental health concerns — The president-elect has proposed fixing a broken mental health system that allows afflicted individuals to go on shooting sprees. Although Trump hasn’t gone into specifics, he pointed out during a 2016 GOP debate that the closing of hospitals to save money has affected those needing mental health treatment, according to On the Issues.

6. Concealed carry permits — Trump has written that he favors concealed-carry permits valid in every state. "The constitutional right to defend yourself doesn’t stop at the end of your driveway," he has written.

7. Opposes gun-free zones — Such areas were put into place to keep guns away, but Trump says “sickos” and “the mentally ill” look for gun-free zones, using innocent people as target practice.
