Throughout his acting career, Robert Mitchum won several accolades for his performances. His tall muscular frame found him cast in parts where he portrayed heroes and villains, but as his career moved forward, he even took on romantic film roles.

Mitchum was known as a jokester and often fabricated tales about his life, encouraging others to do so as well. Prior to working in film, Mitchum worked as a ditch digger, ghostwriter, and a coal miner.

He settled down to marry in 1940 and began to take his acting career seriously. Mitchum’s acting career spans five decades in film, which doesn’t include his work in television after he retired.

Mitchum died in 1997, but his legacy lives on in film and family. His two sons are also actors.

Here are the awards that highlight Mitchum’s storied career in film.
