President Barack Obama has long sided with scientists who believe in the increasing dangers of global warming, and continues to push the United States toward action, even amid staunch political resistance from Republicans.
"I refuse to condemn your generation and future generations to a planet that's beyond fixing," Obama said at
a Georgetown University speech on June 25, 2014. "We will be judged as a people, and as a society, and as a country on where we go from here."

In September, at the United Nations Climate Summit in New York, Obama unveiled ways for the U.S. to help other countries build up a resistance to climate change. These methods include better ways to detect extreme weather conditions to lessen the loss of lives and property, and mechanisms to better prepare for the impact of climate change.
Obama also announced an executive order that requires federal agencies to factor in climate resilience when considering global development programs and investments.
The U.S. has helped form a number of international climate change partnerships, which include the Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture, the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership, the Pilot Auction Facility for Methane and Climate Change Mitigation, and the Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance.
Also in September,
the White House announced a plan to train at least 50,000 veterans to install solar panels over the next six years, which was one of a many initiatives aimed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 300 million tons through 2030. The effort is also designed to slash billions of dollars on energy bills for homeowners and businesses. ()
"The old rules may say we can't protect our environment and promote economic growth at the same time, but in America, we've always used new technologies — we've used science; we've used research and development and discovery to make the old rules obsolete," Obama said in his Georgetown speech.
