Breathe Easy: Taking Magnesium for Asthma

By    |   Thursday, 05 May 2016 06:06 PM EDT

Asthma is an inflammatory lung disease that narrows airways and restricts breathing in adults and children. Taking magnesium for asthma, in addition to prescribed medications, may bring added relief during an acute attack.

In the United States, it is estimated that 26 million children and adults suffer from asthma, reports the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. Asthma symptoms vary, but the most common include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. Asthma triggers also vary and can include allergens, irritants, extreme weather, exercise, illness, and strong emotions.

Once diagnosed, asthma medications may be prescribed. According to Healthline, there are two types of asthma medication: controller and rescue. The former controls and prevents asthma symptoms long-term, while the latter provides short-term relief during an asthma attack.

Magnesium has proven beneficial for some patients when used to treat acute asthma attacks, according to a study by Asia Pacific Allergy as reported by the National Institutes of Health. The results show that in addition to prescribed medication, magnesium sulfate received intravenously (IV) may help stop an acute attack since magnesium works by relaxing the bronchial smooth muscle.

The use of magnesium for acute asthma was first reported in 1936.

Healthline reports that intravenous magnesium sulfate can help relax the airways, reduce bronchial inflammation by increasing the production of nitric oxide, and prevent the production of chemicals that cause muscle spasms.

Taking magnesium for asthma is only recommended during severe or life-threatening asthma attacks, and it is something you should talk to your doctor about before an emergency arises.

More research is needed to demonstrate whether or not magnesium should be taken as a daily supplement to keep asthma symptoms under control. Healthline recommends speaking with a medical professional before starting a daily magnesium regimen.
