Johnson was as enthusiastic about the space program as his predecessor, dealing with the early days of NASA as a senator. The Johnson Space Center handles mission control for NASA in Houston. It was originally called the Manned Spaceflight Center in 1961. It was renamed to honor Johnson following his death in 1973.
