In Memorial: Presidential Monuments Dedicated to Lyndon Johnson

By    |   Wednesday, 13 May 2015 10:01 AM EDT

The Lyndon Johnson presidency occurred during the tumultuous years of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War. Memorials to the president also note his accomplishments through financial assistance with the Great Society and the passage of the Voting Rights and Civil Rights acts.

The hectic events from 1963 to 1969 when Johnson was president led him to escape briefly to enjoy the nature of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. He got away at a secluded spot to deal with the stresses of the presidency at the time. After he died in 1973, Mrs. Johnson requested that a memorial be established at the location.

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove honors LBJ's achievements in obtaining social justice and passing legislation to help minorities and the elderly. While there, visitors can also enjoy the paths, pines and meadow the president experienced for reflection and relaxation.

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial, a granite sculpture with quotes by the president, sits within 15 acres of gardens and trees as part of the Lady Bird Johnson Park, an area also devoted to the First Lady, who spent much of her time on a campaign to beautify America.

The park on Columbia Island along the George Washington Memorial Parkway has a beautiful landscape that includes daffodils and thousands of red tulips.

The Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site east of Stonewall, Texas is a recreational area for swimming, fishing, and nature viewing or picnicking. The park is near the LBJ Ranch where Johnson vacationed at during his presidency and retired to after his years in office.

The LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas has several galleries covering Johnson's impact on the nation. Images and artifacts reveal his years with President Kennedy and the difficult transition to the presidency following JFK's assassination.

Galleries also showcase civil rights issues and the Vietnam War. The Oval Office from the White House is reproduced in the library to give visitors an idea of Johnson's activities and decision-making in this important room.

Johnson was as enthusiastic about the space program as his predecessor, dealing with the early days of NASA as a senator. The Johnson Space Center handles mission control for NASA in Houston. It was originally called the Manned Spaceflight Center in 1961. It was renamed to honor Johnson following his death in 1973.
