Girls With Guns: How to Become a Firearms Dealer

By    |   Tuesday, 21 April 2015 09:19 AM EDT

When girls with guns decide to become gun dealers and obtain a Federal Firearms License (FFL), chances are it's to either open a gun range, or to sell firearms from a brick and mortar store. Becoming a firearms dealer can be an intimidating undertaking if you aren't sure where to start.

A good place to start is with The National Sport Shooting Foundation. They offer an in-depth class on "How to Open a Gun Range."

While not a mandatory class, it offers valuable information to those wanting to start a gun store and/or range business, and covers the process of applying for a Federal Firearms License and much more.

Next, you must submit an application to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (also known as the ATF) to obtain a Federal Firearms License. During the application process, you must submit to a background check and personal interview at the location of the business to be. During the interview, you will be asked exactly what your intentions are with your FFL.

William Miller, owner and operator of Big Woods Goods Gun & Archery Range says, "In past years, it wasn't uncommon for people to apply as 'kitchen table' gun dealers (still with all the same background checks as brick and mortar stores) so that they could obtain firearms at significantly reduced prices. However, the ATF has recently begun cracking down on this."

Now, Miller says the ATF typically requires that the applicant have an actual storefront or range to be considered for a Federal Firearms License.

After the initial application and interview, there is generally a 60 day waiting period before a Federal Firearms License is approved. Once it has been determined that you have met all the requirements to become a gun dealer, you are free to open your business.
