Girls With Guns: 4 Reasons Why 3-Gun Competitions Are the Future of Women's Shooting

By    |   Tuesday, 21 April 2015 09:50 AM EDT

Once girls with guns have mastered basic shooting skills at the range, it's not uncommon to desire more of a challenge. A natural next step is a 3-gun match.

A 3-gun match involves shooting different stages with a pistol, rifle and shotgun. Skill, accuracy and speed are judged and points are earned by hitting certain targets and avoiding others.

Winners are determined based on which shooter has the fastest speed and best accuracy. Let's take a look at just why 3-gun competitions are the future of women’s shooting:

1. It's a valuable skill. Shooting a 3-gun competition requires the competitor to have a good understanding of the safe handling and operation of the pistol, rifle and shotgun. Each of these guns has its place in our daily lives as well, as tools for self defense.

Shooting competitive 3-gun matches is an adrenaline pumping, action packed adventure. But it is that same adrenaline that would be surging in a real-life, self defense situation. Practicing shooting under these circumstances in a safe setting will prepare you to shoot effectively in a self defense situation, if the need ever arises.

2. Camaraderie. Meeting other girls with guns who share similar goals and common interests can evolve into lifelong friendships. Some of the nicest, most down to earth women you will meet will be the ones you've competed with.

3. A chance to try new equipment. Often at 3 gun competitions, the sponsors or hosts will provide "loaner" firearms that you can borrow. This gives you a chance to try out new firearms that you don't have or are unfamiliar to you.

4. It's FUN! You get to practice a valuable skill, make new friends, try out new firearms and gear and have a blast doing it.
