Boston’s reputation may be steeped in Revolutionary War history, but the modern-day New England city is anything but archaic. Here are a few facts about Boston that are sure to catch your interest.

Bostonians love their beer, their baseball, and their blueness. From gay marriage to universal healthcare, Boston is the hub of liberal ideology in Massachusetts – the bluest state in the country, according to a recent Gallup poll.

But let’s get back to beer. Boston breweries include Boston Beer Company, maker of the Samuel Adams brand of brew, and Harpoon Brewery, the 12th-largest beer crafter in the nation.

And then there’s baseball, the Boston religion. The Boston Red Sox bring in $76 million in sponsorships and concessions, another $174 million in gate receipts with a total team revenue of $405 million. That puts the American League ball club in second place in those income categories, according to Bloomberg. First place? You guessed it. Boston’s baseball nemesis – the New York Yankees.

Other facts about the modern-day Boston include:

The city’s confusing network of streets, roads, highways and lanes are the result of its history and centuries of no urban planning. Roads were built around the city’s original forests, hills, streams, marshes and bogs – a transportation blueprint that has lost its purpose but remains in effect, according to the city’s Chamber of Commerce

Boston has one of the best transit systems in the nation. The “T” is a public transportation system that ferries 1.3 million passenger trips a day throughout the city, according to the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. The system includes the first subway tunnels built in the United States.

Jaywalking is the Boston pedestrian’s right, evidently. So many city dwellers jaywalk that police no longer issue tickets.

Home of Dunkin’ Donuts, Boston is spattered with the caffeine-and-sugar shops almost on every corner. In the last decade, the Boston-grown coffee giant has gone head-to-head with Starbucks, the ginormous Seattle-based peddler of all things caffeine. Since 2013, the two companies have expanded the number of shops as they duke it out for the top spot.
