4 Reasons Lawmakers Praise Common Core

After years of states trying to come up with standards that allowed their children to excel, many states embraced the Common Core goals in math and language arts when they became available in 2010.

While the standards have been met with some scrutiny, many lawmakers still support the initiative. Here are four reasons lawmakers praise common core curriculum:

1. They help American Education meet a Global Reality: The National Governor's Association, a group of lawmakers whose purpose is to promote college and career ready education, called the Common Core curriculum a way to "maintain America's competitive edge into the future."

The group of lawmakers and business leaders are promoting additional international benchmarking that will help identify where American schools need improvement in order to help student compete in an international marketplace.

2. The standards are a better approach than what has been tried in the past: President Obama touted the "Race to the Top" program which prompted many states to adopt the Common Core initiative as the appropriate replacement for the "No Child Left Behind" initiative in his State of the Union address.

3. The initiative gives school teachers more control over curriculum while keeping standards high: The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices helped develop the common core learning standards with the focus of "real-world learning goals" that could prepare the children of their states for "college, career and life."

4. Standards that are common to other states will allow all states to engage in best practices for students: In the state of Tennessee, like other states the educational standards for students has to go under a regular review process. As Common Core has come under scrutiny, Gov. Bill Haslan has agreed to review the standards to see if they are still the best for the state.
