What to do When You are Diagnosed with Cancer

Friday, 01 October 2010 12:06 PM EDT

Cancer is a class of diseases where a group of cells exhibits unrestrained growth, spreading in the body uncontrollably, destroying healthy tissues, and forming tumors. Cancer has various common and uncommon symptoms. Therefore, the suspicion of cancer can be confirmed or dispelled through a definitive diagnosis.

Cancer diagnosis involves screening, diagnostic tests, and staging. Screening tests serve the purpose of detection of the possibility of cancer. The results of screening are confirmed from further examinations and tests. Diagnostic tests include imaging study — such as x-ray, ultrasonography, and computed tomography.  The findings of these tests suggest the presence of cancer. Staging can tell the location, shape, size of the cancer, and the region it has affected.

According to a recent study, about half of the men and a third of the women in the United States are screened for cancer. After you are diagnosed with cancer, what do you do next? It is advisable to know every detail about the diagnosis after cancer has been confirmed. Find out the type of cancer you are suffering from, the stage, and available treatment options. Gather as much information as possible about the method of treatment and its possible side effects to get an accurate understanding of the problem. It is always preferable to bring someone along for support. Always go for a second opinion once you have been diagnosed with cancer. You can consult any specialist from the National Cancer Institute in the United States.

A cancer prognosis follows a cancer diagnosis. Cancer treatment depends upon the type of cancer you have been diagnosed with. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and other treatment options exist for the treatment of cancer; some of them can cure cancer completely. Know your cancer and discuss its treatment with your doctor. Cancers act differently, and they require proper analysis and understanding. Therefore, collect ample information before deciding on treatment, and prepare yourself for the side effects, if any, that may come along.

Cancer support is very important because the patient needs a lot of moral support along with extensive physical support at this time. Managing depression, anxiety, and other emotional effects is as essential as coping with chemotherapy effects. The family members and caretakers have to be well aware of the symptoms in order to help the patient recover from the trauma associated with cancer.

Most importantly, after being diagnosed with cancer, do not lose hope. Consult your doctor for the correct cancer prognosis and begin treatment as early as possible. There are many cancer therapies that can effectively cure cancer. Cancer patients need to have a strong will and demonstrate resilience in order to fight against the disease successfully.
