U.S. News and World Report Ranks Top Hospitals in the Nation

U.S. News and World Report released its 2011-2012 honor roll naming the nation’s best hospitals on Monday. The 17 ranked medical centers were evaluated out of a pool of nearly 5,000, and demonstrated unusually high expertise across 16 specialties.
 
The 16 specialty areas used to rate hospital quality were: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, ear nose and throat, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, psychiatry, pulmonology, rehabilitation, rheumatology, and urology.
 
Ratings are based on the number of specialty areas at each hospital and how well the hospital treats patients in that particular field.

Bellow are the top 17 hospitals, in order:
 
1.Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, MD): Points, 30; Specialties, 15.
2.Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA): Points, 29; Specialties, 15.
3.Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN): Points, 28; Specialties, 15.
4.Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, OH): Points, 26; Specialties, 13.
5.Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles, CA): Points, 25; Specialties, 14.
6.New York Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell (New York, NY): Points, 22; Specialties, 12.
7.UCSF Medical Center (San Francisco, CA): Points, 20;
Specialties, 11.
8.Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Boston, MA): Points, 18; Specialties, 12.
9.Duke University Medical Center (Durham, NC): Points, 18; Specialties, 10.
10.Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA): Points, 17; Specialties, 12.
11.Barnes-Jewish Hospital/ Washington University (St. Louis, MO): Points, 16; Specialties, 11.
12.University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (Pittsburgh, PA): Points, 14; Specialties, 8.
13.University of Washington Medical Center (Seattle, WA): Points, 13; Specialties, 9.
14.University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers (Ann Arbor, MI): Points, 10; Specialties, 6.
