Washington offers adventure travel on both the urban and grand outdoor scale. Visitors to the state looking for excitement can choose everything from bicycling, water sports, and hiking to skiing, off-road adventures, and mountain zip lining.

Here are seven Washington adventure travel destinations for visitors looking for excitement:

Latest: What's Your Favorite Type of Vacation? Relaxing or Exploring?

1. Mount St. Helens Zipline Adventure: There are three world class zipline tours available on Mount St. Helens: the Skamania Lodge, the NW Trek, and Tree House Island. "Zip lines are an exciting adventure that can be experienced by any age of adventurer. It is a great family activity that can be enjoyed rain or shine. Experience the thrill yourself of flying through the trees, suspended above the ground as the wind blows your hair back while whisking towards the next platform — where you start over again."

2. Mount Rainier Gondola: The gondola takes up to eight passengers at a time to almost 2,500 vertical feet above the base of the mountain "as skiers and snowboarders zoom down the mountain below." Passengers have a scenic view of Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams, and Mount Baker and can enjoy Northwest cuisine at the Summit House restaurant.

3. The Washington Backcountry Discovery Route: This "scenic off-road route for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles runs north to south from Oregon to Canada across the state of Washington. The 575 mile route uses mostly un-paved back roads through the beautiful Cascade Mountains and some arid landscapes of Eastern Washington."

4. Alki Kayak Tours: Daily sea kayak tours are available for adventure travelers looking to explore the "wilder side of Puget Sound" and to "scout for curious seals and observe nesting bald eagles." This company also rents beach cruiser bicycles for those looking for a leisurely ride on the 3.5-mile Alki Beach Trail.

5. Seattle Cycling Tours: Catch the city sites by bicycle and "see and learn things you would miss from the back of a cab or seat on a bus." This tour company specializes in "neighborhood adventures that will inform, entice, and amuse with stories and places of Seattle you might not know."

6. Whale watching: Washington offers numerous whale-watching opportunities for travelers looking for a marine life adventure. Tours leave from San Juan Island, Bellingham, Everett, Port Townsend, Orca's Island, and Anacortes and options include both kayak and adventure cruises. Adventure Attractions says, "While on the whale watching tour you will most likely also see bald eagles, harbor seals, porpoise, dolphin, rafts of beautiful sea birds, the gorgeous shorelines of the San Juan Islands, usually one or maybe even two lighthouses."

7. Moses Lake Sand Dunes & ORV Park: "Enjoy the fun and excitement of 'conquering' a sand dune and more!" This off-road and 4x4 vehicle park is one of the largest in Washington. It offers almost 3,000 acres of rolling sand dunes to off-road adventurers and a bonus feature is the nearby fishing and water-skiing at Moses Lake.
