Hunting in Virginia: 3 Things to Know Before Applying for a Hunting Permit for Your Kids

Hunting in Virginia with kids can be a rewarding experience for all generations. To make that bonding trip a reality, it’s important to check with state and local laws about licenses and age restrictions and other regulations.

The Virginia Shooting Sports Association encourages introducing children to hunting to increase participation in the sport and bring in revenue for conservation programs.

Here are three things to know before applying for a hunting license for your kids in Virginia.

1. Age
Young hunters who are Virginia residents younger than 12 years of age do no need to have a hunting license or pass the hunter education course, according to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. For nonresidents younger than 12, a hunting license is required, but he or she does not need to pass the hunter education course. In addition, hunters younger than 12 but must be with a licensed, certified adult at all times. Those age 16 and older must have a license to hunt.

2. Hunter Education
After turning 12, children must take and pass the hunter education course to apply for a hunting license. The course is offered two ways: as an in-person class or as a fully online course. Free student manuals are available at regional Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries offices.

3. Lifetime License
If your child enjoys hunting, then it will save time and hassle to purchase them a lifetime license before they turn 12. For even bigger savings, Virginia residents can purchase a Resident Legacy Hunting License, which must be purchased prior to your child turning 2 years old. Both of these must be purchased either in-person or via mail.
