Rolando Ruiz was executed Tuesday after shooting dead a San Antonio woman nearly 25 years ago.

The paid hit man killed 29-year-old Theresa Rodriguez in what was a life insurance scheme, according to The Associated Press.

At the time of the murder, Rodriguez was outside of her home and she was getting out of a car with her husband and brother-in-law.

“As Theresa Rodriguez was getting out of the car, Ruiz put a .357 Magnum revolver to her head and fired,” CBS News reported.

Ruiz was reportedly paid $2,000 by Rodriguez’s husband and brother-in-law to commit the murder, the AP noted.

Rodriguez’s husband, Michael Rodriguez, was set to earn about $250,000 in life insurance as a result of his wife’s death, according to the International Business Times.

Michael Rodriguez and his brother Mark Rodriguez were sentenced to life in prison for setting up the murder.

Michael Rodriguez was executed in 2008 after he killed an officer before escaping prison.

Mark Rodriguez received parole in 2011.

The victims mother, Susie Sanchez, said Ruiz’s execution doesn’t mean much to her, saying it won’t lead to her being able to see her daughter again alive.

“It’s not going to bring her back, so it really doesn’t mean very much,” she said Monday.

Ruiz had some final words before he was executed with a lethal injection, the AP noted.

As Theresa Rodriguez’s two sisters looked through the glass, just moments before Ruiz’s execution, they watched as he apologized for killing their sister.

“Words cannot begin to express how sorry I am and the hurt I have caused you and your family,” Ruiz told the sisters, according to AP. “May this bring you peace and forgiveness.”

Ruiz had a message for his family as well.

“I am at peace,” he said, according to AP. “Jesus Christ is Lord. I love you all.”

Once the lethal injection was administered, Ruiz reportedly was dead within about 30 seconds.
