Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip fed bananas to an elephant Tuesday while touring the opening of a care center at Whipsnade Zoo in Dunstable devoted to the endangered creatures.
The center, which cost 2 million British pounds to build, will house nine Asian elephants who will be cared for around the clock, according to the BBC.
The Queen is a patron of the zoo, and was delighted to know that one of the baby elephants was named “Elizabeth” after her, the BBC reported.
The center will open to the public Wednesday, Reuters reported.
“The elephants, when they saw Her Majesty, were excited and we know that, actually, because we track their communications in the barn and we could see that they were excited with what was going on,” ZSL Zoological Director David Field said, Reuters reported.
“Little Elizabeth didn’t quite meet the queen. She’s still a little young and unpredictable,” Field added. The elephant the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh fed was 7-year-old Donna.
Twitter fans were, as usual, fascinated with any royal doings.
