Phil Robertson's warning about the dangers of promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases in a recent radio interview with Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council have been interpreted by several media outlets as anti-gay.
"Is this coincidental that viewing all of the immoral conduct that America is now participating in . . . Do you think it’s a coincidence that all of these debilitating – literally that can cause death – diseases follow that kind of conduct?" the "Duck Dynasty" patriarch said on Tuesday.
"God says, 'One woman, one man,' and everyone says, 'Oh, that’s old hat, that’s that old Bible stuff. But I’m thinking, well let’s see now. A clean guy – a disease-free guy and a disease-free woman – they marry and they keep their sex between the two of them. They’re not going to get chlamydia, and gonorrhea, and syphilis, and AIDS. It’s safe."

Several media outlets interpreted Robertson's comments as anti-gay, including the
The Wrap,
Mediaite, and
ThinkProgress.
All of those outlets used the words "gay" or "homosexuality" in their headlines describing Robertson's radio appearance, however, as
Breitbart News pointed out, Robertson himself never used those words. His focus seemed to be on promiscuity above all.
It is true that Robertson mentions heterosexual, monogamous coupling a number of times, however, likely because he's a devout Christian – and the Bible generally advocates for heterosexual, monogamous coupling.
"If you want to be safe from a lot of debilitating diseases, the route to go is one man and one woman," he said, concluding his on-air thoughts on the subject.
Robertson did not comment on homosexual coupling, and it's true that any disease-free couple who are sexually exclusive to one another will remain that way, whether it be two men, two women, or a man and a woman. Moreover, disease-free polygamists exclusive to their group will also remain disease-free.
Last week, Robertson spoke with "Good Morning America" to promote his new book, "unPHILtered: The Way I See It." There, a reporter asked about his past comments in GQ magazine where he said homosexuality was a sin according to the Bible and was subsequently temporarily suspended from his A&E reality show.
He responded by saying, "I’m as much of a homophobe as Jesus was. People who are participating in homosexual behavior – they need to know that I love them."
