A LaFerrari – the name means "The Ferrari" – has sold for $7 million, making the limited edition 949hp hybrid sports car the most expensive 21st century car to be auctioned. It was the last of just under 500 of the coupes released by Ferrari.
The “one-of-a-kind” car was auctioned off on Saturday by RM Sotheby’s in Daytona, Florida, following what was “an intense 10-minute bidding,” said International Business Times.
The money raised will go to rebuilding central Italy following a string of earthquakes.
“It is an honor for RM Sotheby’s to be entrusted with the sale of this important car and to help raise significant funds for a desperate cause,” said Sotheby CEO Rob Myers.
The original price had been set at just under $2 million, but bids had been mounting toward $5 million, perhaps due to the limited amount of cars released and the cause, said the Verge.
