Kevin Spacey will not receive the International Emmy Founders Award from the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at an upcoming gala after the actor was accused of making a sexual advance on a fellow actor when the boy was just 14.
The International Academy announced the decision to withdraw the award on Monday night on its website and Twitter page.
“The International Academy has announced today that in light of recent events it will not honor Kevin Spacey with the 2017 International Emmy Founders Award,” the website statement read.
Spacey received criticism this week for choosing to come out as gay in the same statement that addressed allegations made by actor Anthony Rapp, now 46, that Spacey made a sexual advance toward him more than 30 years earlier, ABC News reported.
Spacey said in a statement posted to Twitter that he does not remember the incident with Rapp, but apologized for his “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior” and for the feelings Rapp had to carry around with him for years after the incident, ABC reported.
Production on Spacey's hit Netflix show “House of Cards” has been suspended “until further notice” while Netflix and Media Rights Capital meet with the cast and crew, ABC reported.
Netflix also announced that the show would not continue after its current season, but told ABC News that the decision to end the show after season six had been made prior to the current Spacey controversy.
Twitter users expressed various opinions about the move and about Spacey and the allegations against him.
