Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said he won't rule out a bid for governor or senator in 2018.
"I never say no," Garcetti, who has been considering a 2020 presidential run, told Politico this week, adding that he would make a final decision later this month. "I realize that I need to, because I have enough people who have said, 'are you in that race, or not?' I need to definitively give them an answer. I need to definitively think it through."
Garcetti previously said he would decide whether to run for governor after a decision was reached on Los Angeles' bid for the Olympics, a vote that takes place mid-September. The vote is expected to make official an agreement that was reached to give the games to Paris in 2024 and to Los Angeles in 2028.
"We've won now, but we haven't officially won" he told Politico. "So Sept. 13 I win and I'll kind of turn to that decision."
Garcetti said he hoped U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who has not mentioned plans for a fifth term, gets re-elected.
"She is a dear, close friend. She is a national treasure and a California asset, full stop," he told Politico.
The Sacramento Bee noted that Garcetti would join other possible entrants for either statewide race, including Kevin de León, leader of California's state senate, and Tom Steyer, former hedge fund manager and billionaire liberal activist. Other Democrats vying for governor include former mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Treasurer John Chiang.
