A variety of late-night comedians gleefully ribbed MSNBC host Rachel Maddow for her handling of the release of Trump tax’s 2005 returns.
Maddow announced the release of the returns and had an hourlong buildup to the event, which turned out to be nothing when Trump released the returns himself before she could and it was revealed that he paid a healthy 25 percent tax rate — higher than other politicians like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.
Stephen Colbert said he was going to tell a joke, then proceeded to build it up for a full two minutes without ever getting to the point. He then smoothed the paper containing the joke at length, and said, “Back after this commercial break.”
“Rachel took us on an emotional roller coaster,” Colbert said in his monologue on "The Late Show." “Because like a roller coaster, you end up right back where you started.”
“Last night, Rachel Maddow aired an exclusive report on how to stretch out an hour,” Seth Myers said on "The Late Show." “Who produced that segment, Ryan Seacrest?”
"The Daily Show" host Trevor Noah said, “You made me stay up until 9 p.m. to tell me that Trump pays taxes? Listen here, Rachel, telling everyone that you have Trump’s tax returns when you just had two pages of his 1040 from 12 years ago? That’s like saying, ‘I have a tape of Trump saying the N-word,’ and you go and press play, and Trump goes, ‘Nintendo.’”
Conan O’Brien said, “Last night President Trump’s tax return from 2005 was released, showing that he paid $38 million in taxes. Thirty-eight million. Trump would have paid more, but he listed Vladimir Putin as a dependent.”
Twitter thoroughly enjoyed the roast.
