A recall of Aston Martin luxury sports cars because of defective parts from a supplier has been expanded to include 75 percent of the vehicles manufactured by the company since 2007.

The company said it is recalling 17,590 cars, including left-hand drive cars manufactured since 2007 and right-hand drive cars built since 2012. More than 7,000 of the cars affected by the recall are in Europe, while 5,001 are in the United States, an Aston Martin spokesman told Reuters.

A Chinese supplier reportedly used counterfeit plastic material in a part supplied to Aston Martin, which is owned by Kuwaiti and private investors. The part in question affects the accelerator pedal arm, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a release.

“If the accelerator pedal arm breaks, the engine will return to idle and the driver will be unable to maintain or increase engine speed, increasing the risk of a crash,” the NHTSA release said.

The Aston Martin spokeswoman said there have been no reports of accidents related to this problem.

Shenzhen Kexiang Mould Tool Co. Limited was a sub-contractor that used counterfeit plastic material in the part, Reuters said.

Recalls in the United States hit a nine-year high in 2013, with 21.9 million vehicles being recalled, The Associated Press reported.

Of the 632 separate vehicle recalls initiated by automakers, Chrysler Group topped the list with 36. General Motors came in second with 23 recalls and Mazda was at the bottom with just two recalls.

Toyota recalled the greatest number of cars, the AP said, with 15 recalls impacting 5.3 million vehicles.
