It's Up To Alabama to Decide Moore's Fate, Newt Gingrich Says

The matter of whether Roy Moore will become senator should be left up to the people of Alabama, not to Washington politicians, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.

"They're looking at the evidence; they're listening to the arguments," Gingrich told Fox News "Fox and Friends" program.

"They're going to make a decision. That's how our system is supposed to work. The people of Alabama get to pick who they want to have as the U.S. senator, and the rest of us ought to be a little bit patient and let this play out for a while and see what happens."

He also said he believes politicians and the news media, "who are in a moment of, frankly, almost hysteria," should just calm down.

"This is a serious issue, and I certainly think Judge Moore is going to have to convince the people of Alabama that he's right and these other people are wrong," Gingrich added. "Conversely, I think if the evidence mounts up, he'll get defeated. But that's really up to the people of Alabama. It's not up to a bunch of politicians in Washington."

On Tuesday, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Cory Gardner told reporters Tuesday that if Moore wins his election, the Senate should vote to expel him for failure to "meet the ethical and moral requirements" of the Senate. Others have called on the Senate to deny him the seat if he wins.

Gingrich also discussed the news that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has not ruled out a special counsel to examine several scandals linked to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.

"I think he'll make an honest decision based on his reading of the law," said Gingrich, while pointing out that Clinton has a "40-year history of breaking the law, enriching herself, and lying about it."

"I wrote my newsletter of Gingrich Productions last Friday on Hillary Clinton and cattle futures because I'm old enough, I was around long enough, I remember in 1979 when Bill Clinton was a brand-new governor, and she was giving insider trading information," he added. "She turned $1,000 into $100,000 profit, something which two economists studied later and said was more than a trillion to one shot against being able to do that. So I think she's had a 40-year history of breaking the law, enriching herself and lying about it. And I think that the Clinton Foundation is part of that."

Gingrich said he doesn't necessarily want to see Clinton be tried, but at the same time, "we certainly owe the American people the truth, and we ought to learn all the details about where the money came from, where it got there, how it relates to the decisions she was making as Secretary of State. This is a pretty deep pool of corruption, and it needs to be exposed so that the country understands we're not going to tolerate that kind of behavior in our public officials."
