PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel is considering running for governor of California, according to three Republicans familiar with his thinking.
The Silicon Valley billionaire and longtime supporter of President-elect Donald Trump would seek to succeed Democrat Jerry Brown in 2018, when Brown faces term limits, Politico reported on Saturday.
Thiel, 49, has been discussing a possible run "with a small circle of advisers, including Rob Morrow, who has emerged as his political consigliere," according to the report.
Morrow has worked at Clarium Capital, the hedge fund and investment management company that Thiel started in 2002 in San Francisco.
However, those "who have been in touch" with Thiel remain "skeptical that he’ll enter the race" — cautioning, however, that the early Facebook investor "has conspicuously yet to rule out a bid and that those around him continue to discuss it," Politico reports.
In July, Thiel spoke in prime time at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
He was born in Frankfurt, West Germany, and came to the United States as an infant with his family.
Thiel holds undergraduate and law degrees from Stanford University and is worth an estimated $2.7 billion, according to the report.
Neither Thiel nor a representative responded to requests from Politico for comment.
