President Donald Trump's speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday was his best since taking office in January, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton said.
"This was the best speech of the Trump presidency, in my view. I think he was as clear and direct as it's possible to be," Bolton said on Fox News.
"I think the centerpiece of the speech was the criticism that he made of the behavior of North Korea and Iran. I think it's safe to stay that in the entire history of the United Nations, there has never been a more straightforward criticism of the unacceptable behavior of other member states."
Bolton, who served in the U.N. from 2005-2006, said "people will remember" Trump's harsh words on Korea. Trump said the United States may have to "totally destroy North Korea" if the rogue nation continues to threaten the international community with tests of its nuclear weapons program.
Bolton also spoke about the state of the U.N. and said Trump needs to keep his straightforward approach when it comes to critiquing the organization that boasts 193 member countries.
"The only way to deal with the quagmire that the U.N. represents on so many issues is to be direct," Bolton said. "For Americans, plain speaking is still a virtue. And there was a lot of plain speaking in that speech."
