Former Ambassador John Bolton says President Donald Trump is in the midst of an internal rift over the nuclear agreement with Iran and is getting advised to keep the U.S. in it despite his promise to get out, The Washington Free Beacon reported.
"It's a question of who prevails here: the president or his advisers," Bolton told The Washington Free Beacon. "Based on what's been reported in the press, I think [Trump] does believe this deal is detrimental to American interests, so if he wants to get out of it I'm providing a way to do it."
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, national security adviser H.R. McMaster and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis are among those advising Trump to stay true to the accord.
Bolton wrote a column earlier in the week detailing how Trump could get out of it, taking his proposal public since he's no longer able to get an audience with the president.
"I made the request and it was turned down to see him most recently," Bolton told the Free Beacon. "I don't really have anything more to say other than what I put in the National Review piece. I don't think the specifics are that pertinent."
