Those who need healthcare will be punished by President Donald Trump's decision to cut Obamacare subsidy payments, according to insurers.
"This action will make it harder for patients to access the care they need. Costs will go up and choices will be restricted," insurers Blue Cross Blue Shield and America's Health Insurance Plans said in a joint statement.
"These benefits help real people every day, and if they are ended, there will be real consequences," the statement said.
The subsidies help those with low incomes with copays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs, according to the statement.
"Costs will go up and choices will be restricted" without the subsidies.
The payments are not bailouts for the insurance industry, according to the insurers.
"They are passed from the federal government through health plans to medical providers to help lower costs for patients who see a doctor to treat their cancer or fill a prescription for a live-saving medication," the insurers said, according to The Hill.
The Trump administration's decision was announced Friday.
