House Minority Whip Steve Scalise called reports that Dem. Rep. Eric Swalwell had befriended a Chinese spy “very alarming,” which he said raised questions about Speaker Nancy Pelosi, her knowledge of his ties and why she withdrew from a planned bipartisan commission on Chinese activities earlier this year.
Appearing on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.” on Tuesday, Scalise referred to a report by Axios last week that Swalwell – a member of the House intelligence committee – was befriended by Chinese national Fang Fang, also known as Christine Fang. She targeted the California Democrat as well as other politicians in the San Francisco area between 2011 and 2015, bundling money for his campaign and also getting an intern placed on his staff.
Scalise said Pelosi should remove Swalwell from the intelligence committee and mocked the San Francisco-area four-term Democrat for his accusations against President Donald Trump of collusion with Russia when he was linked to a Chinese agent.
“This is very alarming,” the 55-year-old Scalise said. “He hasn’t denied that he had a relationship with the Chinese spy. That’s at the heart of what was reported by Axios, is that this is going back to the days when he was a city councilman. That they went out and found him. They bundled money for him to help him get elected. They infiltrated his office with what everybody expects was Chinese spies.
“Why isn’t he answering questions about this? Why isn’t Speaker Pelosi answering, was she aware of these ties to a Chinese spy before she put him on the intelligence committee? Frankly, she should remove him from the intelligence committee. But it also raises other questions. Why did Speaker Pelosi withdraw from what was a bipartisan committee to look into China’s activities?”
