Nearly 40 percent of voters said they agree with President Donald Trump on certain issues despite publicly saying they do not approve of him, according to the latest Zogby Analytics poll.
That breakdown includes 58 percent of Republicans who call themselves silent Trump supporters.
The results, according to Zogby:
- 38 percent strongly or somewhat agree to being a silent Trump supporter.
- 53 percent disagree to being a silent Trump supporter.
- 9 percent aren't sure.
- 51 percent of NRA members don't openly share their support for Trump.
- 48 percent of veterans secretly support Trump on issues.
How could silent supporters impact future races? Polling.
"If almost 40 percent of voters are afraid to tell people they might approve of Trump or agree with his policies, maybe there are some voters who are afraid to tell pollsters they support him in a horserace question, or approve of his job as commander in chief," Zogby writes in its analysis.
"With the entire backlash from certain anti-Trump voters and the continued divisiveness in this country, it's not hard to imagine people being afraid of admitting their support of Trump, even if it's telling a stranger by way of email or telephone."
Zogby surveyed 1,514 likely U.S. voters with a margin of error at 2.5 percentage points.
