Someone other than the Cuban government is likely responsible for the sonic attacks on American diplomats in Havana, the White House believes.
McClatchy reported Tuesday there is an absence of evidence that would point to Cuba as being behind the bizarre attacks that have left 25 Americans affected. Some have hearing loss while others have suffered from mild traumatic brain injuries.
"No one believes that the Cubans are responsible," a source told McClatchy. "All of the evidence points that they're not."
McClatchy also reported the Trump administration will bring many of its diplomats and their families back to the U.S. from Cuba because of the situation.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez were scheduled to speak about the issue in Washington on Tuesday.
CNN reported last weekend the number of sonic attacks in the Cuban capital has numbered nearly 50. Some have occurred while diplomats were at their homes, while others have happened at hotels.
U.S. authorities are baffled as to whom is behind the attacks and what exactly is causing the strange symptoms, although a sonic weapon of some sort is suspected. A U.S. official told CNN it seems clear Cuba has some involvement in the matter.
"It is increasingly apparent the Cubans are involved in some way," the official said. "The Cubans are all over our people while they are down there. If it was a few attacks, you could say that maybe it was the Russians or Iranians screwing with us, but when it happens so many times, especially in the same hotel, it is hard for us believe someone can get close enough to our people so many times. Unless these are beams from outer space."
