Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was taken to a hospital last month after falling ill during a Federalist Society dinner in Philadelphia, according to multiple reports.
Alito, 76, attended the March 20 event held in his honor and was scheduled to deliver the keynote address but did not speak. ABC News reported he appeared "tired" and less engaged than usual, remaining seated as attendees approached him.
A Supreme Court spokesperson said Alito "felt ill during an event in Philadelphia" and, "out of an abundance of caution," agreed with his security detail's recommendation to seek medical evaluation before driving home to Virginia.
He was treated for dehydration and given fluids at a hospital before returning home later that night. The spokesperson added that Alito was later examined by his personal physician and returned to work the following Monday for oral arguments.
CNN first reported the previously undisclosed hospital visit.
Earlier that day, Alito was on the bench for the release of a unanimous Supreme Court opinion in Olivier v. City of Brandon, a case involving a protester's free speech rights.The justices also held their regular private conference that afternoon.
In the weeks since the incident, Alito has appeared at oral arguments and shown no outward signs of health issues.
The episode comes as Alito, who recently marked 20 years on the Supreme Court, faces speculation about a possible retirement, though he has declined to comment publicly on the matter.
