Gun Owners Club: 9 Benefits of Joining Your Local Chapter

Gun Owners Club: 9 Benefits of Joining Your Local Chapter
(NRA; Minnesota Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance)

Gun owners clubs vary considerably nationwide in their membership offerings, but most gun owners will find benefits in belonging to local and national clubs.

Here are seven benefits that most gun owners clubs offer to members:

ALERT: Should Obama Have More Control Over Guns? Vote Now

Political lobbying: Whether on a national scale like the National Rifle Association or on a state and local scale, gun owners clubs are generally involved in lobbying for gun rights.

“Which Minnesota House candidates stand up for your Second Amendment rights, which candidates don't, and which candidates don't think you need to know? Find out here,” the home page of the Minnesota Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance said in August. The organization offered an assessment of how candidates voted with regards to firearms legislation.

Training: Most gun owners clubs offer firearms training or align with organizations that do so. The Rocky Mountain Gun Owners Association offers CCW — or concealed carry weapons — training, and many organizations promote the NRA training classes that occur in their locales.

Safety Information: Firearms safety training and information is oftentimes a much-promoted and important activity for gun owners clubs.

Many organizations, like the Washington Arms Collectors, team with the NRA to offer safety courses. “Home Firearms Safety” is a nationally offered NRA course, as is the “Refuse to Be a Victim” course.

Opportunities to connect with other firearms enthusiasts: The Tennessee Gun Owners Club runs a diverse online blog/forum area for people to connect with others who have like interests. Topics cover everything from general subjects like “handgun carry and defense” to answering specific questions, such as “black powder vs. black powder substitute for signal canon?”

Competitions: Gun owners clubs and associations network with each other to advertise shooting competitions and let firearms owners know what’s happening in the competitive shooting world. Sites like the Virginia Shooting Sports Association will list anything happening in the area so interested parties can sign up to compete.

Classifieds: The best place to sell or trade a firearm or other firearms equipment is probably going to be where enthusiasts gather. Many of the gun owners clubs operate classified sections, like the Tennessee Gun Owners Club, where hundreds of items are listed.

Know the law: Many gun owners clubs are excellent places to find out what the local law is regarding firearms. If they don’t maintain the information themselves, they will probably have links to the state government website that defines the rules of concealed carry and other firearms issues.
