As safety questions, recall complications and threats of legal action continue to mount against Toyota, a new Zogby Interactive poll shows some potential good news for the beleaguered Japanese auto manufacturer.

Large numbers of Americans view Toyota vehicles as equally or more safe as other vehicles, and majorities of those surveyed say Toyota's recent safety issues are unlikely to impact their future car purchasing plans.

The Zogby Interactive survey of 2,068 adults nationwide found 64 percent of those surveyed feel Toyotas are, on average, more safe (18 percent)  or equally safe (47 percent) as other vehicles.  Among those who currently own or lease a Toyota, the numbers are even higher, with 85 percent believing Toyota vehicles are more safe (39 percent) or equally safe (47 percent) as other vehicles.

The survey was conducted Feb. 17 through Feb. 19, 2010, and carries a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percentage points.
