President Barack Obama’s counterterrorism policies enjoy wide public support. By more than a 2-to-1 margin Americans say the president’s handling of terrorism is a major reason to support his re-election, a new Washington Port-ABC News poll showed.

The poll showed that 70 percent approved of Obama’s decision to keep open the prison at Guantanamo Bay even though he had pledged to close it.

Self-described liberal Democrats supported the position by 53 percent and moderate or conservative Democrats by 67 percent.

The use of armed drones to attack terror targets also receives wide support even though it has been criticized by human rights organizations. The poll found that overall 83 percent support the use of drones and liberal Democrats support the policy by 77 percent.

The president’s plan to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, which has been criticized by GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney among others, is supported by 78 percent.
