The members of Congress are going home early this week because a snowstorm is headed straight for Washington, D.C.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Republican leaders sent word to members that the House would hold votes on Wednesday morning and then leave the nation’s capital for the rest of the week.

This means lawmakers will vote a day earlier than expected on a stopgap spending bill designed to keep the federal government open through the end of September.

The House was scheduled to have a meeting on Thursday before leaving for the weekend.

The National Weather Service predicts a winter storm on Wednesday that will pound Washington and the mid-Atlantic region with several inches of snow.

The new schedule calls for final votes before 1 p.m., which could still cause major problems for House members.

The NWS says the peak of the storm should occur around that time.
