Texas Gov. Rick Perry is urging the state legislature to remain firm in exercising restraint and resist the temptation to increase spending despite an optimistic revenue outlook, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Instead of spending new revenues, Perry suggested Tuesday the legislature should pursue additional tax relief and indicated his support for a constitutional spending limit linked to population growth and inflation.

Perry warned lawmakers, who just opened a 139-session, to be wary of “interests all across this state, who view Monday’s revenue estimate as the equivalent of ringing a dinner bell.”

The state is expected to have a projected $8.8 billion surplus this year, the Statesman reported.
