Most Americans want Congress to cut spending and increase taxes in any deal to reduce the deficit, though they expect fewer cuts and more taxes when legislators finally agree on what to do, according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey.

Sixty-eight percent of Americans would like to see a balanced mixture of less spending and more revenue in any grand bargain, while 24 percent only want to see spending cuts and only 4 percent think tax cuts are the only option.

Respondents in the poll mostly said they support a mix but 71 percent think it is at least somewhat likely that taxes will go up, while only 43 percent think it’s at least somewhat likely that spending will be cut.

By an almost two-to-one margin, the survey found that votes would like to see more spending cuts than tax increases, 55-to-27, while just under half those who participated in the poll don’t expect that Congress will cut spending at all.

Rasmussen contacted 1,000 likely voters for the poll, which was conducted on Nov. 20. The margin of error is 3 percent.
