Former Wyoming Senator and Simpson-Bowles deficit reduction commission co-chair Alan Simpson has spent a career mastering the art of the pithy sound-byte.
Last August, he set off a firestorm by exclaiming that “Social Security has become a milk cow with 310 million tits.”
However, his latest missive has exceeded even his usual standard. In a withering letter sent last month to the California Alliance of Retired Americans, Simpson berates the group for their flyer urging the deficit commission to “Stop using the deficit as a phony excuse to gut our Social Security!”
“Your little flyer […] is one of the phoniest excuses for a ‘flyer’ that I’ve ever seen,”
wrote Simpson on official Senate stationery. He continued, “You use the faces of young people, who are the ones who are going to get gutted while you continue to push out your blather and drivel.”
Urging the group to “Read the damn report,” Simpson minces no words: “What a wretched group of seniors you must be to use the faces of the very people we are trying to save while the ‘greedy geezers’ like you use them as a tool and a front for your nefarious bunch of crap. You must feel some sense of shame for shoveling out this bullsh*t.”
In a final, colorful bit of imagery, Simpson advises the group, “If you can’t understand all of this you need a pane of glass in your naval [sic] so you can see out during the day!”
