Almost half of Americans oppose Obamacare, and only 36 percent support it, according to a new New York Times/CBS News poll shows.
Those who strongly disapprove of the Affordable Care Act outnumber those who strongly approve of the legislation by nearly 2-1, and 16 percent have no opinion. Full results of the poll haven’t been released yet.
A majority of Democrats approve of the law, though at 56 percent, not a huge majority. A 28 percent portion of Democrats strongly approve. Approval ranks highest among liberals, with nearly two-thirds of them in favor.
But Republicans are stronger in their opposition to Obamacare than Democrats are in their support of it. About 75 percent of Republicans oppose Obamacare, and more than 60 percent disapprove of it strongly. Tea party respondents break down about the same way. And opposition to the law peaks among very conservatives, with more than 80 percent of them disapproving.
Independents skew closer to Republicans, with 51 percent of them opposing Obamacare. That’s a positive sign for Republicans in the presidential race in November.
