Obama Revives Rumsfeld Missile Strike Plan

The Obama administration is looking at adopting one of the more controversial ideas of the Rumsfeld-era Pentagon: equipping intercontinental ballistic missiles with conventional warheads, and using the missiles to strike any target around the world.

In theory, reports the online Homeland Security Newswire, the missiles could destroy fleeing targets a half a world away — a no-notice “bolt from the blue,” striking in a matter of hours.

But there is one problem, critics note. Because the missiles would look exactly like incoming nuclear missiles, they could inadvertently ignite World War III.

The Bush administration tried several times to push the idea of these conventional ICBMs, but time and again Congress refused to provide the funds for it. “For many minutes during their flight patterns, these missiles might appear to be headed towards targets in these nations,” a congressional study notes.
