Two Republican senators are taking aim at taxpayer-funded federal judicial conferences sponsored by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that have taken place in recent years as other federal circuits have canceled their own annual meetings due to budget restraints.

According to Breitbart News, Alabama’s Jeff Sessions and Iowa’s Chuck Grassley are seeking details about expenditures for travel, lodging and other cost associated with Ninth Circuit conferences dating back to 2008 and 2009.

The two senators are apparently curious as to why the Ninth Circuit seems, as Breitbart News put it, “determined to go on spending large amounts of money on plush conferences, when a more prudent approach could provide the same value for professional purposes.”

There was no mention in the letter of this year’s upcoming Ninth Circuit gathering in August of judges and lawyers from nine states at a Hyatt Regency resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Breitbart News said the cost to taxpayers could be “approximately $1 million.”

“Research by Breitbart News suggests other districts are making efforts to cut back, while the Ninth District appears to have maintained a Party on, dude!’ attitude when it comes to putting on its judicial conferences,” the news sources says.
